Strangers on a Train

I spend a good part of the year in Germany. Before each trip, I check the State Department's advisories for Americans travelling abroad. In the last year, the State Department has elevated the danger-level for Americans travelling in Europe, because of America's incursions into Iran and Venezuela--in addition to the usual constants: the Third World and Muslim resentment of America's wealth, power, and support for Israel.

Where have all the nudists gone?

Friends of mine in Germany have introduced me to a new magazine, Tichy's Einblick, published by its editor-in-chief Roland Tichy, and featuring provocative in-depth studies of the German political and cultural landscape, as well as Germany's interface with American, European, and Russian issues.

Lord of the Flies: Create your own country, when you have no choice.

Years ago, I read William Golding's famous novel Lord of the Flies for the first time, and have had it in my collection for as long. The plot concerns a group of English boys during World War II who have to evacuate Singapore as the Japanese Army advances down the Malay Peninsula. They board a plane to escape, but it is shot down by Japanese gunners and crashes into the ocean.
