The Lessons of Hitler

This campaign poster from 1933 shows Adolf Hitler beside the Chancellor Paul von Hindenburg, the hard-fighting field-marshal who led German forces in World War I, and served as hardly more than a believable figurehead to lure Germans to support Hitler as his successor. The caption reads "The field-marshal and the corporal: Fight with us for peace and equality!" That the Nazis dared employ this level of self-serving deceit makes me feel sick.

Strangers on a Train

I spend a good part of the year in Germany. Before each trip, I check the State Department's advisories for Americans travelling abroad. In the last year, the State Department has elevated the danger-level for Americans travelling in Europe, because of America's incursions into Iran and Venezuela--in addition to the usual constants: the Third World and Muslim resentment of America's wealth, power, and support for Israel.

Where have all the nudists gone?

Friends of mine in Germany have introduced me to a new magazine, Tichy's Einblick, published by its editor-in-chief Roland Tichy, and featuring provocative in-depth studies of the German political and cultural landscape, as well as Germany's interface with American, European, and Russian issues.
